What are resistance bands?

Resistance bands are a lightweight, elastic exercise equipment that enable its user to strengthen and/or stretch their muscles for aesthetics, athletic performance, or physical therapy. The bands provide a variety of resistances that range from very light to heavy to suit your fitness level. The beauty of its lightweight nature is that you can take the bands with you anywhere you go without the hassle of the added weight and clutter.

What are the benefits of using resistance bands?

1. Reduced chance of injury

Training with elastic bands provides similar, and sometimes even greater muscle activity as traditional weight training. The chances of injuries is reduced because of the lower amount of force on the joints, which allows more stimulus on the muscles. Resistance bands allow many people suffering from existing injuries or join pain to continue working out and maintaining their healthy lifestyle.

2. Greater muscle stimulus

One of the most notable differences between free weights and resistance bands is the variable resistance applied through the full range of motion of an exercise. When using resistance bands, the muscles receive a greater resistance at its stronger point in the range of motion, which allows for receiving more adequate resistance to better stimulate strength adaptations.

3. Stabilization and core activation

The constant tension from the bands requires you to stabilize your body to maintain the appropriate form during exercises. This also means that you will need to engage your core to maintain your balance.  The need to control the bands from slingshotting back into place requires greater strength and stimulation through the muscle's full range of motion. The pull of the bands allows you to reduce your chance of "cheating" during the exercise by using momentum.

4. Improved strength and athletic performance

Power resistance bands are commonly used and are extremely effective for athletic training due to the increased load, variable resistance and instability.  A combination of resistance bands and weights can also improve neuromuscular performance and strength more than weight training alone. The bands are also commonly used for speed and agility drills.

5.  More exercise options

When using resistance bands, you can perform exercises both horizontally and vertically. For example. you can do a chest press or a back row in a standing position rather than having to use a bench. You can also perform sideways movements for athletic activities as well as daily tasks.

6. Ideal for rehabilitation

Resistance bands have been proven to improve strength, size and function of muscles in individuals undergoing physical rehabilitation.

7. Stretching and Mobility

Resistance bands are great for pre-workout mobility work and post-workout stretches. An individual can use the bands to assist with stretching to extend their reach and provide pressure.

8. Perfect for travel

Resistance bands are easy to back in your bag or suitcase that will allow you to workout in a hotel room or outdoors without dragging around heavy equipment. They won't add extra weight to your luggage, but they will still give you an effective full-body workout. If your working out at home, a set of resistance bands can save you hundreds of dollars and space instead of buying traditional weights.

Who should use resistance bands?

Anyone can use resistance bands to acheive their fitness goals. Whether it be athletes, the elderly, pregnant women, resistance bands are for anyone that wants to gain muscle, lose weight, or stay in shape.

How do you clean and store resistance bands?

Cleaning was never so easy.  To clean your resistance bands simple wipe them down with a damp cloth, avoid using soap and harsh cleaning products. Avoid storing your bands in rooms or areas of extreme temperatures to preserve the elasticity.
